GROWING UP HALAL

Welcome to the "Growing Up Halal" podcast! Hosted by Sulphia, Hanan, Amena, and Aisha, GUH is a podcast dedicated to creating a reassuring voice for young Muslim girls across the country who feel unheard, underrepresented, and deprived of a platform they could truly relate to.

With every episode, our team adds to a collection of stories and interviews relating to the Muslim-American experience!

our favorite episodes!

As rising seniors, we’ve been really busy thinking a lot about college and starting our college apps. We’ve also heard so many concerns about college from our friends and their parents. So today, we’ve brought on Ramsha Khan, a sophmore at Rutgers University, to learn about the college experience for Muslim Americans and what we can expect!

Check out our new series “The College MSA Field Trip”! Join us each week as we interview members at college/university MSAs around the country to learn about the school, its Islamic community, and the application process! We meet with students from NYU, UCLA, and Princeton!

In this episode, Sulphia (fencing) and Amena (lacrosse) are joined by guest Amirah Ahmed (track and field, cross country) to talk about the Muslimah athlete experience! From discussing the struggles of finding suitable, modest athletic wear (spoiler alert: we got a lot to say about the Nike hijab 👀), to telling stories of the awkward situations they’ve had with male coaches, teammates and referees, to encouraging listeners to gain the courage speak with your coach and catch prayers on time during practice hours, to learning how to continue training while fasting during Ramadan, these three cover it all!

In today’s episode, Amena and Hanan were accompanied by Aronno Shafi, a senior at NYU! She was able to share with us a bunch of things she wish she had done as a high school student, and gave us so many tips on things ranging from interviews to financial management as a young muslimah! Tune in to this episode to learn more about these tips and to hear about Aronno’s art business and other fun experiences, including studying aboard in Europe!

Unfortunately, there are too many misconceptions about Muslim girls. Many people falsely believe Islam to be a religion that oppresses its women and robs them of their most basic rights.

We want to put Muslim girls like YOU in the spotlight and show the world what we're capable of. Are you a young artist? A star athlete? Creator of an app? Founder of a non profit? CEO of a startup? Do you have a story that will inspire other younger Muslimah? If so, fill out this form for a chance to be featured on our Instagram!
